Queens will now have one more option when it comes to staying true to their New Year’s resolutions.

While the new Planet Fitness on Wyckoff Avenue in Ridgewood is still in the latter phases of development, it quickly picked up over 100 members, and around another 500 members since the gym’s pre-grand opening push started at the end of December.

Today, the grand opening of the club, located directly across from the Myrtle-Broadway M and L subway station, is currently slated for Feb. 17, however manager Alex Cancel is confident they can have it up and running a little sooner.

“It’s moving along really well right now,” Cancel said. “February 17 is our start-up date, but no later than that. We’re really aiming for the end of January.”

Members can sign up for a special $1 start-up fee during the pre-grand opening sale; and select from either a $10, month-to-month membership, or for the club’s Black Card Membership, which is $19.99 per month for a minimum one-year commitment.

With a certified instructor on staff, they will have fitness workout instruction classes included with the gym membership. Cancel explained the Planet Fitness is the perfect gym for the “average person.”

“A lot of times people come in to the gym not knowing what they’re doing, and they just feel lost,” Cancel explained.

Cancel, 25, can speak firsthand from setting weight loss goals, as he was once 95 pounds heavier than he is now. And he assures his new members that the payoff for sticking to the plan is something that anyone can accomplish.

“Set short term goals for yourself,” Cancel advised. “Say you want to lose 50 pounds, focus on losing 10 pounds first, and once you see it starting to work it motivates you to want to do it more.”

Owner James Innocenti said that the New Year brings a lot of overly ambitious newcomers to the gym. However, he is confident that the atmosphere at Planet Fitness is compatible with what it takes to stay true to those resolutions.

“The thing is, with our membership rates, especially in the new year, everybody comes in here and goes so hard in the beginning,” Innocenti explained.

Like other Planet Fitness gyms, members in Ridgewood will have access to state-of-the-art workout machines with iPod docking systems, the use of flat screen televisions and free Wi-Fi.

“We have a laid-back approach and our members usually stay members a lot longer because of our concept,” Innocenti said. “You don’t have to drink protein shakes every day to get in shape here.”
