The last two weeks have proven that we are in January and we are in winter. Yes, winter is here. This year is not like last year when we had spring-like weather, and we were spoiled. So bundle up, for it seems winter is here this year. So, think warm thoughts, for Daylight Savings Time is only 41 days away followed by the beginning of spring only 51 days away.

Recently, there was a graduation class from the NYPD Police Academy. As I stated, our 102nd Precinct has received no additional police officers from the last graduation class, this means again as in 2010 no police officers for two of the last three years. This year we have good news: we have received seven new police officers.

It is so important, for our Woodhaven needs additional fine professional men and women for our precinct. We thank you our new 102nd Precinct Captain Henry Sautner, our lieutenants, sergeants, and police officers for holding the line and you know that our good thoughts and prayers are with each one of you always as you patrol our streets and keep us safe.

Remember, leave your porch lights on! Also, if you see people loitering where they don’t belong or walking into driveways or on the side of your home, do not confront them, call 911.

• Important Telephone Numbers - The telephone number for the 102nd Precinct is (718) 805-3200 then dial 0, Community Affairs Officer P.O. Joseph T. Martins and P.O. Jose Severino's telephone number is (718) 805-3215. The Anti-Terror Hotline number is (888) nyc-safe (888-7233). If you see something, say something.

Emergencies and suspicious persons call 911, and if anyone presents themselves as a police officer ask to see a badge and identification both before admitting them to your home. If they hesitate call 911.

This past week we experienced “Surprise Monday,” for all along Jamaica Avenue and our side streets, wherever we had standing parking meters, we now have muni-meters. These muni-meters are being installed throughout Queens on all commercial strips.

So, here we are with new meters. At the inception of our Woodhaven Business Improvement District 20 years ago, I had requested two-hour parking meters. This change from one hour to two hours has been very positive for our shoppers, business and storeowners. This more so now with the installation of muni-meters.

These muni-meters have been installed throughout New York City. No one was given a choice. So, when you see these blue standing structures, you know what they are.

During the previous weeks, two great leaders who happen to be ladies were sworn into their respective offices. They are Honorable Nydia M. Velasquez, our Woodhaven’s U.S. Congresswoman, and Honorable Helen M. Marshall, our Queens Borough President. I have always stated that our Woodhaven was so fortunate to have such great and supportive elected officials.

These ladies exemplify professional and committed elected representatives that through the years have worked with us and have always had our community’s best interest at heart. To them I state congratulations and thank you.

Please fly our American flags above all others in Woodhaven, for we are still at war against evil terrorists. May God bless our leaders, may God bless our armed forces, and most of all may God bless our America.
