Thankfully, you don’t have to go far to pick up reasonably priced food from our supermarkets and fresh vegetables from our green markets. Also, some of our supermarkets can take orders over the phone and make free home deliveries. So, if you don’t want to go out, stay home and get what you want delivered right to your door.

Now we look forward to spring! Your calendars will tell you that daylight savings time will begin on Sunday March 10, 2013, in 34 days, and spring beginning on Wednesday March 20, 2013 44 days to go. “So, hold on springs-a-‘coming”, to paraphrase a 50’s song, with only 44 days to go!  Next week is “Valentine’s Day”, the love week.

I hope that you will shop for a nice gift to give on the annual day of love! And I hope that you will buy your valentine “Tokens of Love” on our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue from Dexter Court to 100th Street.  As I have stated before, in our many Stores, you can buy cards with loving sentiments, and any “heartfelt” gifts you may need.  Most of our Stores are family owner-operated; who offer personalized warm attention to their shoppers; all on your award-winning Woodhaven’s Business Improvement District, right here on your “Everything Avenue.”

So buy that perfume, jewelry, special outfit and especially the home made delicious box of chocolates for that loving lady in your life. And for that special guy; buy him a shirt, a special manly cologne and if you really want to show your love, let him have some of your valentine chocolates. All, of course, purchased on our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue.

So please always shop locally especially now, in these difficult times, keep your money in our Woodhaven Community!  I hope that you have a very loving day with many appreciated gifts. Remember, Woodhaven business owners care about Woodhaven for they contribute toward your WBID, a fund that is vital to Jamaica Avenue.

Remember, our children will be safe in New York because of our Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown who is prosecuting all child abuse cases to the fullest extent of the law.  If you suspect child abuse, call 1-800-342-3720. You may remain anonymous.

Mark your calendar for Easter when the Woodhaven Business Improvement District’s Easter Bunny will out an about. (Saturday March 23, 2013).  On this day our fluffy Easter bunny will take free pictures with the young and young-at-heart in our Forest Parkway Plaza area off Jamaica Avenue, between 1-4 p.m., also distributing goodies!

There will be more activities along our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue (weather permitting), with more on this to come.

Our Woodhaven Business Improvement District remains the only BID in southeast Queens besides the three Jamaica BID’s. Make use of your Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue, your shopping strip from Dexter Court to 100th Street - where our American Flags fly proudly - and the trees in our Forest Parkway Plaza that are strung with red, white and blue lights in honor of our Armed Forces. Please shop locally on your Patriotic Shopping Strip.

The Woodhaven BID is still distributing free American flags, also “God Bless America” flyers.  Just call 718-805-0760 or 718-805-0202 for more information.  Fly our American flag proudly and replace it often.

This week, our city of New York lost one of the best Mayors ever when Edward I. Koch passed away. I remember him when he came to Woodhaven for a town hall meeting that brought out more than 300 in attendance. I also had met with him at meetings related to Queens and Woodhaven.

Edward I. Koch was a giant and set the bar for NYC Mayors to come. His wit and his love for “his” city will be missed.

This weekend, to all of our Chinese friends and neighbors, enjoy the Chinese Lunar New Year 4710. I thought of our own Malaysian Lion Dancers who appear yearly at our Wonderful Woodhaven Street Festival. (Please view on our website or on These Dancers are so colorful and exciting. So, let us hope that this second New Year of 2013 is one of individual courage in all of our endeavors and Prosperity for us all.

So may I wish you Gung Hay Fat Choy Happy New Year! May God bless our leaders, may God bless our armed forces fighting terrorism on foreign shores so that we may be safe at home and may God bless our America.
