While members of Community Board 9 were focusing on the U.S. Tennis Association’s proposed expansion in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, one resident shifted the focus to the proposed QueensWay project.

Transforming 3.5-mile portion of the abandoned Rockaway rail line through south Queens into a High Line-style park is gaining traction, as $467,000 in state funds was recently allotted to study the proposal.

The line abuts many backyards of residents who live in Howard Beach through Rego Park, as well as the backyard of Neil Giannelli, who lives on 98th Street in Woodhaven.

Last week, he submitted to the board three different questionnaires - one asking if resident supported light rail, a bike path or no development – to residents of 186 homes between Park Lane South and Atlantic Avenue.

“98.3 percent were opposed to any development along the old Rockaway line,” he told the board. “Four people thought that a bike path was a good idea.”

Forest Hills resident Dan Olson said that any decision made with regard to the abandoned line should be concerned with the good of the community.

He said that the creation of a light rail line “might make more sense,” than any of the other options, but said he was still not sure which proposal he would support.
