St. Matthias Monsignor Edward Scharfenberger has participated in the parade since he first joined the Parish in 2002.
“A large number of our Hispanic community is here,” Scharfenberger said. “It’s a reenactment of the 14 stages of the cross, which represents moments from when Christ was commenced to death until the time he reached Calvary and was crucified.”
The group of over 100 members of the church and community sang solemn religious hymns along the procession route, organized by the Jornada youth group from St. Matthias.
They crawled along Onderdonk Avenue and up Catalpa Avenue to the church for the final stages of the reenactment, and later met with a congregation from Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal at 62-81 60th Pl.
“It tends to be something that draws people who may not be of the Catholic faith,” he said. “It’s sort of a neighborhood thing as well. There’s probably twice as many people who will end up with us than began with us in the beginning.”
