Golden Gloves Finals Come to Barclays Center

The Daily News Golden Gloves championships began a new chapter in its 86-year- history when it crowned 25 new champions at the Barclay's Center last week over the course of two nights.

It's the first time the championships have ever been held in the arena, and boxing fans were treated to some thrilling amateur boxing on both Thursday and Friday nights. A look at the bouts and the winners:

Some notable highlights from the tournament:

• Christina Cruz made history by winning a seventh consecutive title, breaking a tie with Danny Villar for the tournament’s winningest boxer.

• Alexander Vargas earned the Mark Breland trophy for best novice.

• Misato Kamegawa earned third consecutive title at 119 pounds. She became the first Japanese-born boxer to win the Gloves in 2011.

• Mendez Boxing Club won team award, earning 11 points from its open class boxers, 16 for the novice contenders and 26 points for its women competitors.
