This is perfect for walking on our Woodhaven Business Improvement District on Woodhaven’s “Everything” Jamaica Avenue from Dexter Court to 100th Street. Yes, as I have stated before, we in Woodhaven have “walkability,” where all of our shopping and other good neighborhood amenities are within walking distance.
This being especially good for our older shoppers, for the walkability keeps them independent. Also for our families, who can always “run down to the avenue” to pick up something or pick up something on the way home from work. This, our thriving shopping strip, with mom-and-pop stores and larger stores contributing to our vibrant Woodhaven Community.
This is the reason that every year the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation sponsors our Annual Spring Anniversary Dinner Dance. This year the theme for the event, now in its 34th year, is “Happiness is Spring,” so named because of the warmth of spring that everyone enjoys at the end of winter.
And with the sadness of Sandy, the hope that spring brings to us in the greening of our trees and the blooming of our flowers lifts our spirits. This year we especially welcome this warmth so that the rebuilding of all the areas ravaged by Hurricane Sandy can be accelerated.
At our “Happiness is Spring” Dinner Dance, as in all previous years, we honor our great elected officials, storeowners, business owners and contributors to our community. These honorees, in addition to being so important to Woodhaven, have led very interesting lives. Next week there will be the “big reveal” and we will announce our honorees for 2013.
On Friday June 7, the Happiness is Spring 34th Anniversary Dinner Dance will be held again at the beautiful Woodhaven Manor Caterers (formerly Cordon Bleu), newly renovated and under new management at 96-01 Jamaica Avenue. In line with the theme, ladies are encouraged to wear warm spring colors.
The tickets for this great party with music are priced at only $65 for a wonderful evening of enjoyment with good food, good music and good company. Please call (718) 805-0202 for reservations and ticket purchases. Attend and enjoy!

Our Forest Park Senior Citizen Center in the Woodhaven Volunteer Ambulance Corps has reopened, having been closed since the building next door collapsed. The WBID thanks the city Department of Small Business Services for their assistance. Our organization will continue to work with the Department of Small Business Services, our elected officials and city agencies because of this near disaster. We will keep you posted.
Please mark your calendars for our Annual Greater Woodhaven-sponsored “Small Town” Memorial Day Observance on Thursday, May 23, at 7 p.m. at the Forest Parkway Plaza at Forest Parkway and Jamaica Avenue. At this observance we will place our new wreath at the World War II Memorial and hold a remembrance to those lost in defense of our country. Please try to attend.
Now let us make sure we continue to fly our American flags above all others and also wear your flag lapel pins. May God bless our leaders, may God bless our armed forces and our disabled veterans, and may God bless our America.
