After her daughter was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, Christine Hipgrabe decided she would walk in a fundraiser to fight the disease. Along with a group of friends, they created the team “Laura’s Tomorrows” in honor of her little girl.

However, three weeks before the event, they decided it would be better to host a fundraiser at The Byre Pub on 69th Street in Maspeth. The bar is owned by a friend of the Hipgrabe family,

“We kind of suggested it to them and they said that they would love to do it,” said Hipgrabe.

This event, the second annual fundraiser to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, will be held on Sunday, May 19, and begin at 2 p.m.

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects the lungs causing the individual to have difficulty breathing. Those with the disease are at higher risk of lung infections, poor growth and sinus infections.

The event will include a raffle with assorted donated items. Some of them can be seen at There will also be a band and DJ.

Last year the group raised nearly $4,000, and they hope to do better this year.

“We started last year,” she said. “And it was a pretty good day for everybody and hopefully this year will be even better.”
