Some things are just incredible. Walk-off home runs, buzzer-beating baskets (darn you Villanova for ruining my bracket!), and Hail-Mary touchdowns are all spectacular, but nothing is quite is amazing or incredible as a perfect game.
And for that reason, Nina Cesare is our Athlete of the Week.
Cesare, a junior pitcher on the New York Institute of Technology’s softball team, pitched a perfect game last weekend in the Bears’ 8-0 win over Chestnut Hill. Cesare, a Whitestone native and graduate of St. Francis Prep, was downright dominant, striking out 10 of 15 batters in her five innings of work.
And it hasn’t just been a one-time thing, either. Cesare was on fire last week, posting a 4-1 record along with a 1.84 ERA. She punched out 40 batters during that span and allowed only 6 runs in 29.1 innings. Her performance earned her East Coast Conference Player of Week honors.
Last year, Cesare helped lead NYIT to its first ever NCAA tournament berth, and the way she’s pitching, we certainly wouldn’t bet against the Bears to get back to the dance.
Congrats to Nina, this week’s Athlete of the Week.
