The 2013 Heroes Basketball League came to a close last week, as the champions were crowned in four separate games at Monsignor McClancy High School in East Elmhurst.

The 10 & Under champions were Queens Kings, in the 12 & Under Division it was Our Lady of Grace, HiLo Pro took top honors in the 14 & Under Division, while Steve’s Pizza were crowned champs in the 17 & Under Division.

Over 700 kids participated in this year’s league. Regular season games were played on weeknights in May and June on the outdoor courts at both Crowley and Frontera parks.

Regular Season Action St. Joe’s 28

Street Ballers 24


In the 14 & Under Boys Division, St. Joe’s beat Street Ballers, 28-24, in a game that wasn’t decided until the final minute. Emil Gacevis successfully scored five points in the last quarter for St. Joe’s, allowing them to pull away. The high scorers for St. Joe’s were Enes Vandk with eight points and Emil Gacevic with five points. The high scorer for Street Ballers was Amahri Harper with 14. Boubecar Wai also contributed in the winning effort with great defense.

St. Helen’s 36

Flushing Express 32


In the 14 & Under Boys Division, St. Helen’s beat Flushing Express, 36-32. It was a close game, but great offensive efforts from Tristen Matcano and Jordi Erazo allowed St. Helen’s to pull away and outscore Flushing Express in the fourth quarter. The high scorers for St. Helen’s were Tristen Matcono with 13 points and Jordi Erazo with 10. The high scorer for Flushing Express was Lino Gagliano with 17. Daniel Arocena also contributed in the winning effort with great defense.

St. Kevin’s 39


In the 17 & Under Boys Division, Steve’s Pizza defeated St. Kevin’s, 53-39. Steve’s Pizza was led by Austin Chavez, who led numerous fast breaks and played hardcore defense. The high scorers for Steve’s Pizza were Chavez with 17 points and Daniel Scarpulla with 16. The high scorer for St. Kevin’s was Nick DiVanna with 18. Corey Hill also contributed in the winning effort with great passing.

Flushing Express 48

Crazed Dogs 19


In the 14 & Under Boys Division, Flushing Express defeated Crazed Dogs, 48-19. The high scorers for Flushing Express were Steven Castro with 13 points and Lino Gagliano with seven. The high scorer for Crazed Dogs was Derek Chorzepa with 10. Ryan Fert also contributed in the winning effort with great rebounding.

Brooklyn Queens Warriors 36


In the 17 & Under Boys Division, Steve’s Pizza beat Brooklyn Queens Warriors, 38-36. Steve’s Pizza managed to pull away at the end of the game, thanks to the consistent effort of players like Daniel Scarpulla, Corey Hill, and Austin Chavez in the fourth quarter. The high scorers for Steve’s Pizza were Scarpulla with 16 points and Hill with nine. The high scorer for Brooklyn Queens Warriors was Josh Wright with eight. Stephen DeVivo also contributed in the winning effort with great passing.

In the 17 & Under Boys Division, Steve’s Pizza beat Queensway, 63-54. Daniel Scarpulla and Austin Chavez led the way to victory with strong rebounding on the part of Scarpulla and chavez constantly pushing the ball up the floor. The high scorers for Steve’s Pizza were Chavez with 18 points and Scarpulla with 16. The high scorer for Queensway was Thomas Sanchez with 19. Brandon Chavez also contributed in the winning effort with great passing.

Blessed Sacrament 53

Average Joes 32


In the 17 & Under Boys Division, Blessed Sacrament beat Average Joes, 53-32. The high scorers for Blessed Sacrament were Jalen Smith with 16 points and Kevin Cruz with seven. The high scorer for Average Joes was Michael Esposito with 15. Blessed Sacrament built up a lead by playing great defense and successfully getting the inside shot throughout the entire game, as well as hitting the boards hard. Allen Ramirez also contributed in the winning effort with great defense.

Byre Bulls 29


In the 12 & Under Boys Division, California Pizza Kitchen beat Brye Bulls, 33-29, in a game which was not decided until the final minute. California Pizza Kitchen pulled away at the end on two fast breaks that both led to points. The high scorers for California Pizza Kitchen were Becir Hot with 11 points and Angelo Senerchia with six points. The high scorers for Brye Bulls were Gabriel Ferrin with 11 points and Catherine Finnerty with six points. Jared Polanco also contributed in the winning effort with great defense.

Tranquility 19


In the 12 & Under Boys Division, Nowstar Limmo beat Tranquility, 27-19. Nowstar Limo had a 13-3 halftime lead, but the game was still within reach until Nowstar Limo pulled away in the 4th quarter. The high scorers for Nowstar Limmo were Luke Vadala with eight points and Frank Navarra with five points. For Tranquility the high scorer was Matt Bianchi with five points. Steffen Zeichner also helped in the victory with great passing.

Scholars Through Sports 16


In the 12 & Under Boys Division, Tranquility beat Scholars Through Sports, 22-16. The high scorers for Tranquility were J.C. and Matt Bianchi with five points each. The high scorers for Scholars Through Sports were Mathew Kieblesz with six points and Jonathan Rodriguez with four points. It was a close game until Tranquility put it away on a Bianchi three-pointer. Zach Fisher also contributed in the winning effort with great rebounding.
