Back to school they go! And we know what that means in Woodhaven, our Annual “Back to School Sales Days” on Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue have begun.

Many bargains to be had in your award-winning Woodhaven BID. Yes, your WBID was honored with the Barbara Wolff Award of Excellence in June 2000. At the time, we were only in place seven years and selected over Times Square, Bryant Park and many million dollar BIDS.

The Woodhaven Business Improvement District is located only on Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue, from Dexter Court to 100th Street, our Everything Avenue, because you can find everything you need right here on Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue where we’re Taking Care of BIDness.

There are great purchases available with great savings, especially on Saturday, August 24, when your WBID will sponsor “Back to School” Sales Days with the great music group Plastic Soul, face painters and free giveaways as always, including American flags, all along our Jamaica Avenue, courtesy of your store and business owners that make these activities possible.

So this Saturday, August 24, from 1 p.m. on, shop while you enjoy the music, the clowns and free face painting. So, buy, buy, buy and then relax by eating out or ordering in at the many restaurants with good food, great sales, and fun events only in Woodhaven.

Now back to the history of our Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation and Woodhaven Business Improvement District. As I have stated before, the WBID is comprised of all of Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue and was formed and founded by the GWDC.

The GWDC, prior to the creation of the WBID, was responsible for all of Jamaica Avenue, the Forest Parkway Area, Woodhaven Boulevard, all stores, businesses, and apartment buildings within Woodhaven and the stabilization of our community.

The GWDC, since being founded 35 years ago, has been a leader in saving Engine Co. 293 and Engine Co. 294 (twice), working with the NYPD for more patrols on and off of our avenue, the complete improvement of the Wykoff Apartments, the installation of lighting for Forest Parkway and side streets, saving the B56 bus route along Jamaica Avenue, and the painting and repair of our Jamaica Avenue Elevated train, stanchions and stations.

Also, the securing of funding twice for the renovation of our Forest Parkway Plaza area, which we maintain. The GWDC also removes graffiti from commercial locations off Jamaica Avenue. The GWDC is now assisting the WBID in securing new luminaires for our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue.

The GWDC has administered the WBID since its inception 20 years ago. Also, the GWDC sponsors solely through our office, now in our 33rd year, our “Wonderful Woodhaven Street Festival.” The GWDC Staff and I run this festival through our office with no outside fair operators. This Wonderful Woodhaven Street Festival was voted Best St. Fair in Queens. So mark your calendar for 2013’s Festival on Sunday, October 20, from noon to 6 p.m.

Tuesday September 10, will be the Democratic and Republican primaries. You should be receiving postcards in the mail regarding your polling location address. This is where you vote in the Primary and in the November General Election. It is important that Woodhaven votes, for voting makes us strong.

The General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 5. If you can not get to the polls to vote, due to a handicap or the possibility of bad or snowy weather, then plan on securing an absentee ballot now, just in case. Please call (866) 868-3692 to have an absentee ballot application mailed to you, then fill it out and return to the address noted.

The last day to postmark the return of this application is Thursday, September 5. You will then receive your absentee ballot, which will have to be mailed back and postmarked by Wednesday September 11. Please do not lose your opportunity to vote. Remember every vote counts. If you need any additional information, please call our Office at (718) 805-0202.

Big congratulations to GWDC’s Nicholas Komninos of Woodhaven, who was named to the Dean’s List for the Spring 2013 semester at Paul Smith College. Nick, you make Woodhaven proud.

If you are not aware of it already, Woodhaven’s own St. Thomas the Apostle graduate Dr. Thomas Reilly sadly has closed his Forest Parkway Office. Dr. Reilly’s patient an kind beside manner endeared him to all through the years. It’s a shame that we are losing this excellent physician from his and our community of Woodhaven.

On our GWDC/WBID office door and the Mary Whalen Bulletin Board on Forest Parkway we often place flyers. Many are for lost or found pets. After a while, I call the telephone number on the flyer, with trepidation, to find out if a pet or a pet owner had been found.

In our case recently, I called regarding a Jack Russell mix that was found. Unfortunately the owner was never found, but there was a happy ending and he was placed in a good loving home.

See you in the Forest Park Plaza or on Jamaica Avenue on Saturday August 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. at our WBID Back to School Sales.

Fly your American flags proudly above all others and replace them often. Wear your flag pin, too. May God bless our armed forces, our disabled veterans and may God bless our America.
