Erric Molloy, founder of Percent Apparel, ran and organized the event, which was his first in New York.
“This [was] a great thing to end the summer with,” Molloy said. “A lot of people coming out and having a good time, one last big bang before most of these kids go back to school.”
About 40 skateboarders signed up for the competition for a chance to win apparel and merchandise from sponsors like Roar Sports Drink, Fortune Headwear, and WHADUFUNK.
While the contest drew the biggest crowd and most applause, there was also time prior for skateboarders to practice and talk to others about tricks.
“I couldn’t do half the stuff, but it was fun,” said Joshua Cotto, a contest participant.
“There’s no entry fee, it’s all free,” Molly said. “I try to keep everything as free as possible and do as much as I can for the community that way.”
Molloy has organized several events outside the state, but this was his first in New York.
“I’m very happy with the turnout for the day, we got perfect weather,” he said.
Humza Deas won first place for best trick on a ledge, with Derek Holmes coming in second. Duron Simons took home the gold for best trick on two-block with Marco Colon coming in second.
The overall winner got the chance to receive a flow sponsorship from Roar Sports Drinks.
Other sponsors included LICK NYC, The City Don’t Sleep, Manners Movement, and ISkate. The event was also featured on nyskateboarding.com, which is where a lot of publicity came from, according to Molloy.
Winners weren’t the only skaters to get free prizes. A product toss featured several shirts and hats thrown into the rowdy crowd.
“This is excellent,” Molloy said. “You’ll see a handful of people at different spots, but for everybody to come together and share their talents and help push each other to do bigger and better tricks. It’s always amazing to see.”
