Avella leaving race not a big surprise

Dear Editor:

State Senator Tony Avella withdrawing from the race for Queens Borough President is no surprise. ("Avella's departure & Queens beep race"- Pol Position, August 22)

Once congressman and Queens County Democratic Party Chairman Joseph Crowley crowned former Councilwoman Melinda Katz as his choice, the previously crowded field began to disappear.

Avella now joins Councilman Leroy Comrie, Deputy Borough President Barry Grodenchik and State Senator Jose Peralta as loyal members in good standing. They have taken the "hint" from Crowley and folded their tents to move on elsewhere.

Don't be surprised when they are rewarded by Crowley by becoming deputy borough president or go to work for the next mayor, comptroller or public advocate. Only Councilman Peter Vallone, Jr. has the cojones to stay in the race until the bitter end.

Of course, raising over $1.4 million doesn't hurt, either.

Sincerely,

Larry Penner

Great Neck
