This Saturday, September 28, nearly 60 homes in our community will take part in “The Great Woodhaven Yard Sale.” (See the accompanying map for the locations near you.)

The idea is simple. Each year throughout the neighborhood, there are hundreds of different little independent yard sales. People take the time of set up tables and carry stuff up from the basement or down from the attic.

And how do they advertise? Many of them print out copies of hand-drawn signs and staple them to telephone poles around Woodhaven. Not only are they unsightly, posting signs this way is illegal.

So our idea is this: why don’t we get organized and have all our yard sales on the same day? Print the locations on a map, publish that map in the paper and post it online. Now, the person who goes to the yard sale around the corner from you will, we hope, stop by your house to see what you are selling, and vice versa.

Also, we’ve been asking participants to send us select photographs of the items they will be selling and we’ve been posting them online, enticing prospective buyers to come visit various locations.

For example, I’m a book hound. I doubt you’ll ever get me to convert over to a Kindle or a Nook, I like the touch and feel of an old book and I absolutely love digging through boxes of old paperbacks. All it took was seeing one picture of a pile of old books and I knew I’d be heading for that location this Saturday.

Close to 60 homes have signed up for our neighborhood-wide sale this year, and we’ve received interested inquiries from people living in neighborhoods all over Queens. Our hope is that each year, more and more families will choose to participate.

Maybe in a few years we’ll be publishing maps with 200 or 300 yard sales on it, attracting people from all over the city. Remember, the Wonderful Woodhaven Street Fair started small, just five blocks, and look how that’s grown.

The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association will be opening their doors at 84-20 Jamaica Avenue on Saturday and putting out some items for sale. This would be a great spot to start your day and a great way to find out if there were any late entries.

For the very latest map, check out the WRBA’s website (woodhaven-nyc.org) or at projectwoodhaven.com. We’ll also be posting it on Facebook and Twitter.

We hope to see you out there Saturday on the streets of Woodhaven, hunting for bargains and finding some neat stuff. Send us pictures of your favorite bargains and we’ll post them online. And keep us in mind for next year, because this is one event we hope to turn into a yearly tradition.
