In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson declared that “all men are created equal.”
Equality as understood by the founding fathers leads to liberty and the emancipation of creative differences. Wrongly understood, it leads first to conformity and then to despotism.
A claim for equality of material possessions and outcomes for all can be met only by a government with totalitarian powers. The Constitution does not guarantee equality of conditions and outcomes. It only guarantees equality of opportunity.
Alexis de Tocqueville after his visit to America observed that “Americans are so enamored of equality that they would rather be equal in slavery than equal in freedom.” Politicians by exempting themselves from the laws they pass, repudiate the declaration “all men are created equal” and affirm their role as elite rulers over an acquiescent servile citizenry.
Jefferson also warned “when people fear the government, there is tyranny. When the government fears the people, there is liberty.”
Are you free from fear?
