In order to restart the dormant group, members of the chamber’s steering committee have been meeting every Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at Dix Realty at 103-14 Metropolitan Ave.
Following a three-year hiatus, the group is starting from the ground up in order to bring back a variety of flea markets, sidewalk sales and community sponsored events to the south section of Forest Hills.
James Van Westering first brought the idea for revitalizing the chamber and starting a Metropolitan Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) to a Community Board 6 meeting back in February.
“We have many property owners who say there is a need for a BID or a chamber of commerce,” Van Westering said at the meeting last Thursday. “We came to the judgment that a BID is too much of a jump from where we are now, but since there is an existing chamber of commerce, then the problem becomes reactivating.”
Van Westering and the group are planning the first chamber-sponsored event on Wednesday, November 6 at 6 p.m. with member Dan Olson’s Sixth Annual “Whine, Cheese and Taxes” meet-and-greet and tax information seminar at the American Legion Continental Post at 107-15 Metropolitan Ave.
Olson said the presentation will cover everything from the fiscal cliff to lingering questions regarding the Affordable Care Act, as well as provide a place for business owners to discuss the community and network.
“This is an opportunity for people on Metropolitan Avenue, the businesses, store renters and owners, to come together and get to meet each other and socialize in a structured and fun way,” Olson said.
Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz has been in talks with the group since earlier this year in an effort pump some energy into the business community on and around Metropolitan Avenue.
“The planned reformation of the Metropolitan-Forest Hills Chamber of Commerce is welcoming news that is bound to have several positive impacts to the nearby businesses and community,” Koslowitz said.
