From Dec. 26 to Feb. 3, the Greenpoint YMCA is waiving joiner’s fees in an effort to attract new faces.
“Time and health are gifts, so there is no better time to start exercising than today,” said Tatiana Terzouli, director of Fund Development for the Greenpoint Y. “Think about if you had started and committed yourself to exercising a little bit every day since last Jan, you would have seen a huge difference in your health today.”
Terzouli and the YMCA are also hosting three open houses, on Jan. 11 from 12 to 4 p.m., Jan. 22 from 5 to 8 p.m., and Feb. 1 from 12 to 4 p.m. to provide an up-close look at the facility.
“Doing 20-30 minutes of exercise a day is all you need to feel better and be fit,” Terzouli said “There is a quote by an unknown author, ‘Health always seems much more valuable after we lose it.’ That is so true.”
YMCA of Greater New York vice president of Healthy Lifestyles Lori Rose Benson says there are some ways to help stay true to your promises for the New Year.
“Publicly declaring one’s resolution, holding yourself accountable and building a network of support is a great way to reach one’s goals,” Benson said. She added that social media outlets are also, “making it easier and more fun than ever to track one’s progress and engage others.”
Benson suggested keeping a calendar to mark your progress and setting realistic goals are a few ways to get started in 2014.
“Resolutions that involve major lifestyle changes can sometimes seem daunting,” she said. “Make those commitments less intimidating by ‘chunking’ them and dividing them up into smaller, more manageable, or incremental short-term goals.”
