St John's Women's Basketball
While the Red Storm men may get all of the attention, it has been St. John’s women’s basketball team that has brought home all of the glory the past few years.
This past year was yet another successful season for the Red Storm women, who advanced to the third round of the WNIT. Part of the reason for their success was the play of freshman Da’Shena Stevens.
Stevens, a 6-1” forward from Stamford, Connecticut, fit right in with the veteran Red Storm team, averaging 11.9 points-per-game, a team-best 6.6 rebounds-per-game, and collecting 35 blocks.
Stevens’ play earned her unanimous Big East freshman of the year honors, and she will even have the opportunity to play for her country. This week, Stevens was invited to the 2009 U-19 National Team Trials held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs next month.
The invitation has her Red Storm coach ecstatic. “I am really excited that Da’Shena received this honor,” St. John’s coach Kim Barnes Arico said. “Da’Shena worked extremely hard and her performance this season got her name out there. This is such a great honor for our program and for Da’Shena.”
We would wish Stevens luck at the trials, but with her play during the season, we are confident she won’t need any luck. That’s why Da’Shena Stevens is this week’s One to Watch.
