The Forest Hills Kiwanis Club and the American Legion Continental Post 1424 have already begun planning for their annual Memorial Day Parade, scheduled for Sunday, May 25, at noon.

Tom Long, Legion post commander and member of the Kiwanis Club, said the group has already received commitments from a number of bands and schools and has been in contact with members of Brooklyn’s Ft. Hamilton fleet.

“I think we are going to have a number of active military people there,” Long said. “We’ve had Navy and military veterans for the last two years, but because of the government shutdown, we’ve had no participation from the active military people.”

So far, the Kiwanis Club has raised $500 this year, on top of $1,200 left over from the last parade, however Long says the group is aiming for nearly $12,000 to make the parade possible this time around.

“We’ve gotten good reception so far,” Long said. “We are planning to make this a successful parade once again.”

In search of additional sponsors and donors, the group is planning a fundraising cocktail party at the Legion, located at 107-15 Metropolitan Ave., on April 29 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20.

“With the purchase of a ticket, there will be free food, one free drink and we will be announcing our grand marshals, as well as the VIP award,” Long said. “All people and storeowners are welcome to attend.”

Sponsors are asked to make donations in increments of $100, $250 or $500. For more information on how to donate to the Kiwanis Club for the parade this year, contact Long at (718) 704-4197.
