MillionTreesNYC is a citywide tree-planting initiative committed to introducing one million trees into the city ecosystem across the five boroughs by 2015.
While tNYRP has given away over 1,000 trees at various TD Bank locations in the past, they handed out a record-breaking 350 trees at the new store in Maspeth over the weekend, the second largest of its kind by the organization.
“We are helping to advance the goals of NYRP to plant these one million trees by two years,” explained a TD Bank representative at the event, saying the partnership has sped up the original goal set for 2017.
NYRP member Chris Vanterpool helped children and their families in and out of the TD Mobile Forest biodiesel-powered truck that was parked in the new bank parking lot at the event.
“People can get a little chance to go in the forest in TD branches this spring, and inside there are representative trees from New York’s forests,” Vanterpool said of the green efficient big rig.
With their support for the tree giveaway, Vanterpool added that events like this are mostly intended to bring some excitement to the community.
“This is to show people and get them excited about trees,” Vanterpool said. “The message here is sustainability and environmental stewardship.”
