She might not be one to boast about her accomplishments, but LaGuardia Community College Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Payal Doctor, who serves as the faculty adviser of the Alpha Theta Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa works hard to create a positive learning environment.

In recognition of her accomplishments, Doctor was among 39 PTK advisors internationally nominated by their chapters and selected by a panel of judges from over 100 nominees worldwide to win the 2014 Paragon Award for New Advisors at the annual PTK Chapter Advisors Luncheon and Hallmark Awards Gala in Orlando, Florida, on April 24.

“This is really an award for the students,” Doctor said. “While I feel honored that PTK thinks of me in this way, it is the students who are doing the hard work and I am just there to make sure they stay on track.”

Doctor was selected for her contributions to the implementation of a number of new initiatives within her chapter, including leadership skills workshops, research projects and a collaboration with the college IT department to develop an app to help students navigate the campus and club environment.

What makes Doctor a noteworthy educator, said student Tishara Reid, is her accessibility and personal concern for the well being and progress of her student-members. Before the registration period every semester, she meets with students to review their course schedules and to make sure they are taking the proper courses toward their majors.

Scheduled bimonthly meetings allow her to see if the students are on track to achieve their goals and that the heavy workload is not affecting their grades.

“Her advice and guidance have helped me become a better person, scholar and leader,” Reid said, adding that Doctor encouraged her to run for her post as vice president of programming and events within the chapter. “Dr. Doctor has inspired me in immeasurable ways.”
