Apparently whoever made suggestions to change the [Forest Hills] parade route (Kiwanis already planning for 2015 Memorial Day Parade – Forest Hills Times, 6/12) does not have knowledge of the reason for the line of march.
The start point is in front of the American Legion Hall, where it should be since Memorial Day honors and remembers those who fought and lost their lives in the service of the U.S.
The ceremony at the end of the parade is held at Remsen Memorial Park, where the remains of three Remsen family members are buried. They all fought in the War of Independence and that site provided a location for storing material in the Battle of Long Island.
Memorial Day is not a commercial fun-filled day, and the parade would be dishonored by the inclusion of dog processions, skateboards, etc. What an insult this would be to our serving military and to all veterans.
The parade at one time included many military units, which should be brought back, as well as all local organizations, schools, youth groups, marching bands and any appropriate unit.
Memorial Day must be observed with dignity, and respect must be given to all who have served and continue to serve our nation.
