A Queens College auditorium was filled with men and women in uniform, as a class of 944 police recruits were sworn in last week by Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner William Bratton.

“You are signing up for, literally, one of the toughest jobs there is,” de Blasio said in his remarks at the ceremony. “And we know that you are willing to put your lives on the line.

“8.4 million New Yorkers depend on you, and I hope you understand how many of them appreciate, and realize, that you're willing to do something that the average citizen doesn't necessarily have in them to do. But you do,” he said. “You're willing to make so much of a difference that you'll even put your life and safety on the line. And that is something we honor.”

The mayor noted the diversity of the new class, with members hailing from 56 different countries and speaking 44 different languages. Of 944 recruits, 167 members of the class were born outside of the United States.

He also noted that 28 recruits moved to New York City specifically to pursue the dream of joining the NYPD.

Over 100 people in the group previously served in the armed forces. One recruit, Matthew Caulfied, is a decorated Special Forces officer.

The recruits will now undergo six months of training, both physical and mental, before entering the city’s police force.

After the mayor conducted the official swearing in, Bratton took a moment to speak of the responsibility and pride that comes with becoming a member of the NYPD.

“There’s no profession in the world in which you can, as an officer or as a leader, every day, make decisions that will have so much positive or negative impact on the lives of so many,” Bratton said. “You are joining an extraordinarily proud department, the New York City Police Department. The largest in the country, one of the largest in the world, inarguably the best.”
