The fourth round of the World Skatebording Rider Cup New York qualifying round were held at Astoria Park on Sat., August 2, where six teams competed for a $2,000 cash prize and the chance to compete in the Manhattan finals for another $10,000 in grand prize money.

Local New York skate legend Steve Rodriguez ran the contest, and while he was skeptical that the competition would even take place considering the unfavorable weather reports, he was surprised to find a dry, rideable course waiting for him when he arrived.

"After a stressful week thinking about the huge storm that was supposed to hit Friday night and Saturday morning we decided to roll the dice and push the Rider Cup Queens Qualifier start time back to 3pm on Saturday […] cross our fingers and hope it would be dry," Rodriguez said. "By noon things had changed a bit and the rain had stopped but it was still pretty wet out. One look at the radar and I knew the storm had passed!"

Eight teams registered for the event, but those were pared down to six teams for the competition. While all the teams brought their A-game, it was Team Belief who rolled away the winners, earning them a top spot in the Cup finals, scheduled for Aug. 16 in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Team Wave Sauce and Team Outliers also earned a spot in the finals, a chance at the $10,000 cash prize, and an all expense paid trip to South Africa.

The event was made possible by Volcom.
