Cal Tops LIU in NCAA Tournament

After winning their first Northeast Conference championship in six tries, the Long Island University women’s Tennis team fell to California in the first round of the NCAA tournament last week, 4-0.

In doubles action, the duo of seniors Ashley Harvey and Amy Hosotsuji suffered an 8-1 loss at the second position to the No. 35 team of Marina Cossou and Claire Ilcinkas. At the top spot, the No. 7 team of Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova dealt an 8-3 decision to juniors Selma Babic and H’Ann Johnson.

With the Golden Bears leading 1-0 after capturing the doubles point, Babic, the NEC Player of the Year, gave No. 11 Jana Juricova a go at the top spot. In a hard-fought top position match, Babic took a 4-3 lead in the first set, before Juricova captured the last two games prior to the match being called. The stoppage came after the Bears secured their fourth point, a 6-0, 6-1 win for Anderssen, ranked No. 41, over Johnson.

In other action, Stephany Chang defeated Hosotsuji, 6-0, 6-1 at the No . 3 position and No. 26 Cossou downed Harvey, 6-0, 6-0.
