A 2006 graduate of the Master Gardener training program at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Valdez has received training in various aspects of landscape design and plant management from the Central Park Conservancy and the Queens and Bronx botanical gardens.
“When I heard that the city was looking for people to help maintain the parks, I went to a seminar,” he recalls. “From there I participated in a lot of open field training and eventually enrolled in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens master gardener program.”
At least once a week, Valdez visits parks in Williamsburg and Greenpoint for service and inspection.
Parks he services include McGolrick, Steinberg and Cooper parks, as well as McCarren Park when an extra pair of hands is needed.
“I am responsible for weeding, pruning, cleanup, planting when needed, and removal of hanging limbs,” Valdez says.
While many parks in the city suffer from lack of attention, Valdez says he continues his push to keep his parks’ landscaping under control because it is his personal passion.
“The bottom line is that I love landscaping,” Valdez says.
