Arm wrestlers compete for the title of ‘Golden Arm’

The New York Arm Wrestling Association recently hosted the 37th Annual Empire State Golden Arm Tournament of Champions at Cheap Shots Bar in Flushing. Over 70 contestants and 200 spectators took part in the event.

The super-heavyweight open right-hand champion was Dan Sorrese from Deer Park, who took first place in his weight class and then beat all the winners of the day’s competition in their respective weight classes to win the overall New York State Strongest Arm Award.

The left-hand overall winner was Richard Calero from Puerto Rico. Both men won the day’s cash prize of $100 for their efforts and day’s MVP Awards.

The New York State Women’s Awards went to right-hand champion Joyce Boone, also known as the “The Queen of Arms” and the left overall women’s award went to Beulah Stevens. Both Boone and Stevens are from Brooklyn.

The New York State Arm Wrestler of the Year was Gary Gallo Sr. from East Patchogue. Team Puerto Rico scored the most points to capture the 2014 Empire State Team Championship Award.

This much-anticipated 37th Annual Empire State Arm Wrestling Championship is the finale of the NY Golden Arm Series and is one of the oldest and most prestigious arm wrestling title events in New York City,”
