I worked as a transportation planner for many years at the State Office Building on 11th Street. I recently drove to Long Island City and didn't realize how many new and under construction high rises there were.
What was missing through were the supermarkets, schools and parks to serve these new residents. Finding a parking space was very difficult and none of the buildings had parking open to the public.
Transportation, especially bus service, is lacking. LIC is not an alternative to manhattan for these reasons. It's lack of schools, parks and shopping malls makes low and middle-income housing a bad idea as well.
