The McClancy Crusaders baseball team finished 2nd in the regular season and were rated as high as 6th in the CHSAA AA league before opening the playoffs with division rival St. Francis Prep.

The best-of-three series opened at McClancy. Trailing 1 to 0 in the bottom of the 7th, the Crusaders rallied for two runs and a walk off win. The next day, the series moved to Prep, and in a tight game the Crusaders came out on top by a score of 3 to 2.

The series win advanced the team to a quarterfinal matchup with Fordham Prep at Fordham University. In another tight game, the Crusaders prevailed by a score of 4-2. The win advanced the team to a winner’s bracket showdown with Archbishop Molloy at St. John’s University.

The Crusaders exploded with a five-run 4th inning and when on to defeat Molloy, 13-2. One win away from the city final, McClancy would go on to lose 5-3 to Salesian and 4-2 to Msgr. Farrell. Farrell and Salesian would meet in the final, with Farrell winning the championship. The teams success was based on great pithing and tight defense.

Sophomore center fielder Quentin Holmes and sophomore pitcher Charlie Neuweiler made First Team All-League, while senior third baseman George Mercado, senior catcher Anthony Fanelli, and senior second basemen Andrew Santora were named to the second team.

“I could not have asked for more from these young men,” said head coach Nick Melito. “The maturity and leadership of our seniors was a major reason for our team’s success. We have three outstanding sophomores who will continue leading our team in the right direction.”
