Why does the Queens Public Library spend $30 million for a new Far Rockaway branch while ignoring a Kew Gardens Hills branch way behind schedule for re-opening?
The branch at Vleigh Place and 72nd Avenue has been closed since 2012 for expansion and rebuilding. It's sorely needed by school kids for homework projects, seniors who lack web access, and bibliophiles like me who love reading dead-tree and digital books.
We've had no recent updates or reasons for the delay from Queens Public Library interim CEO Bridget Quinn-Carey, Borough President Melinda Katz, Councilman Rory Lancman or Assemblyman Michael Simanowitz.
Libraries penalize readers for overdue books. What's the penalty for an overdue library and who pays it? If our public officials fail to respond, they should check out of their jobs.
