Once again, Councilman Vincent Gentile has remained silent and continues to lead the City Council in funding her organization.
Last week, Linda Sarsour posted on her Twitter account a photo of a Palestinian boy preparing to throw a rock at Israeli soldiers and called it “The definition of courage.”
It is bad enough that Ms. Sarsour has condemned New York City elected officials who support Israel in the face of terrorist attacks from Hamas, but now she has gone so far as to publicly support Palestinians who are teaching their next generation to commit acts of violence against Israel.
Sadly, there is a Facebook page titled “Intifada Youth Coalition-Palestine” that just posted a video on how to carry out deadly stabbings on Israelis. As part of the current “stabbing Intifada” over the past month, young Palestinians have succeeded in killing eight Israelis.
Rather than encouraging young Palestinians to commit violence, Ms. Sarsour and others who claim to be leaders should help to foster peace.
Last year, Ms. Sarsour wrote an op-ed piece titled “New Progressive Era Still Politics As Usual Regarding Israel,” where she criticized New York City Democrats for standing “with a handful of political elites to show unwavering support for Israel” against terrorist attacks from Hamas.
She complained that there is a “knee-jerk reaction” in defense of Israel against Hamas, a terrorist group that does not believe Israel has a right to exist.
Unlike Councilman Gentile and most of the City Council, Queens Councilman Rory Lancman responded to Sarsour’s “definition of courage” comment by stating, “No, the definition of barbarism”.
Lancman further said, “Attacking Jews at their homes, schools, supermarkets, cafes, buses, roads, synagogues and Seder tables is barbarous, and enlisting children to commit those acts is even more so.”
Linda Sarsour’s response to this: “The Zionist trolls are out to play. You will never silence me.” When asked about these events, Councilman Gentile’s response was “no comment”.
Since 2012, Councilman Gentile has led the City Council in providing Linda Sarsour’s Arab-American Association of New York with over $164,000 of our taxpayer money. Therefore, he is in a strong position to influence and condemn her comments.
It is time for Councilman Gentile to follow the example set by Councilman Lancman and condemn Linda Sarsour and her pattern of comments supporting acts of violence against Israelis.
