On Wednesday, House lawmakers approved an amendment to the House energy package that will lift the 40-year ban on crude oil exports. I am disappointed, yet again, to see the House vote to lift the ban. The ban protects our environment and health by prohibiting crude oil exports, which discourages increased drilling and fracking.
Thankfully, some representatives in the House voted to protect our environment and health. New York representatives Jerrold Nadler, Nydia Velazquez, and Joseph Crowley voted to support the ban which, if lifted, would result in more than 7,600 more wells being drilled per year across the country.
This will worsen the effects of global warming, increasing pollution by 22 million metric tons; the equivalent of five coal-fired power plants. Not to mention it could expand the risk of toxic spills from the transportation systems of pipelines and rails.
To avert the worst impacts of global warming, America needs to get off of fossil fuels and shift to clean, renewable energy. Lifting the ban will instead greatly exacerbate the effects of climate change.
For the sake of our planet and future generations, I thank the representatives who voted to keep the ban on crude oil exports.
