Councilman Eric Gioia celebrated the new season of the Sunnyside Greenmarket, which in 2007 he lobbied the Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC) to open, on June 6. The Sunnyside Greenmarket, located on Skillman Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Street, will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. now through November.

"I'm happy to be here today to kick off the new season, and know I'll be back soon to pick up fresh food for my family," said Gioia.

With the popularity of locally grown produce on the rise, there are now 46 greenmarkets in New York City organized and operated by CENYC. The Sunnyside Greenmarket is the sixth to open in Queens.

Unsold produce is donated to organizations dedicated to feeding NYC's hungry. Over 300,000 pounds of food were donated to City Harvest in 2005.
