School war zones

Dear Editor,

The latest two incidents in which students brought guns to school is just the tip of the iceberg.

Statistics indicate that over the last year, violence in the city's public schools has dramatically increased, yet the Department of Education insists that this is not so.

Parents need to become more vocal regarding the safety of their children in the classroom, and the UFT also needs to demand better protection for its teachers and their students. Students who commit acts of violence need to be immediately suspended or, if necessary, expelled.

Schools are supposed to be safe havens where learning can take place in a nonviolent peaceful atmosphere. Our public schools are turning into war zones. What does our illustrious mayor and smiling chancellor have to say to that?
