According to police, the man entered the mosque at 85-37 168th St around 1:30 p.m., and began hitting the members inside. A source added that the man entered the mosque at the time of Zuhr prayer and asked for a Quaran and an iPhone then running around inside during the prayer.
He first struck a 46-year-old male, causing a laceration then subsequently struck a 69-year-old man which caused swelling to both his forehead and left eye, then fled the scene, police said.
After he left the mosque, police were able to find the suspect on the field at nearby Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical Education High School, the same source said.
When approached by officers, the man reportedly removed his clothes and ran naked down the street, police said, before they were able to take him into custody. He was transported from the scene to Queens General Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
Police believe that he may have taken some type of narcotics, possibly a mixture of synthetic marijuana and cocaine.
The two victims were transported from the scene to Jamaica Hospital to be treated for their injuries.
