The American Lung Association of the Northeast applauds the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for releasing the long-awaited rules giving the agency regulatory authority over all tobacco products, including cigars, electronic cigarettes, hookah and any future tobacco products.
These common sense protections will save lives and we look forward to their implementation in August. We call on members of Congress to protect public health and not block or weaken any of these important provisions.
In addition to implementation of the FDA rules, it is imperative that state and local governments continue to move forward on proven methods to reduce tobacco use.
Specifically, we must pass comprehensive smoke-free laws that also restrict the use of electronic cigarettes; increase tobacco control and prevention funding; and ensure that all smokers have the tools necessary to help them quit their addiction.
Lastly, states must continue to push forward with policies like Tobacco 21 that will prevent another generation of our kids from being addicted to these deadly products.
