National Police Week runs from May 15 through May 21, and we should honor all those fallen officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the community they served with pride and devotion to duty.
Retired NYPD captain Joseph Cocannon wrote in a letter to the Queens Village Republican Club that, "on average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 61 hours."
I found that to be quite sad for the families, friends and fellow law-enforcement officers.
Let's all show respect to the brave men and women protecting us, and if you see a police officer offer a friendly smile and maybe even words of encouragement.
