We ran this undated photo from our archives last week looking for some clues and information, and perennial reader Jeff Gottlieb, president of the Central Queens Historical Association, contacted us with some tips. Here’s what he wrote:

“I remember this group from the late 1970s and early 1980s.

From the left is City Councilman Peter Vallone of Long Island City. He is several years away from becoming Speaker of the Council. An unknown person is next to him. Third from the left is City Councilman Morton Povman (Kew Gardens Hills), next to Morty, receiving the check, is Archie Spigner of St. Albans. City Comptroller Harrison J. Goldin is next to Archie. Mayor Edward I Koch is in the center of the group, and handing out the monies is Donald R. Manes, Queens borough president and Board of Estimate member. To the right of Manes is City Councilman Sheldon Leffler (Jamaica Estates), and facing the camera is Walter Ward (Howard Beach).”

So, essentially a who’s who of Queens elected officials hanging from former mayor Ed Koch at City Hall. But in addition to the man standing second from the left who remains a mystery, Jeff picked out another interesting aspect of this photo that has nothing to do with the men.

“By the way, I remember few portraits of women at City Hall. Who is the lady above Spigner and Goldin?”

Good question! If you can shed some light on the unidentified man in the photo – or better yet have some information on the funky painting hanging on the wall – drop us a line at polposition@queensledger.com.
