Queens College tops Wilmington

The Queens College women’s tennis team picked up a 7-2 non-conference victory over Wilmington Sunday afternoon. The Knights are now 3-0 overall on the year.

The Knights won two of three flights in doubles, and five of six singles matches. In the doubles portion of the match, the first doubles duo of Angelika Sobiecka and Emy Alplund moved to 3-0 on the year with an 8-2 win.

In third doubles, the pair of Line Sorsdahl Aasen and Darya Kolesnichenko picked up an 8-4 win. Wilmington won second pairs, 8-4.

In singles, Laura Ortega Jover won in first singles 6-1, 6-1, in a match that clinched the victory for the Knights based on the order of finish. In third singles, Sobiecka won a hard fought tiebreaker 4-6, 6-3 (10-6), for her third win in a row. Also remaining undefeated with wins were Alplund in fourth singles, Aasen in fifth singles and Araceli Bel Aleixendri in sixth singles.

Up next match for Queens College is the ITA Championship at Eisenhower Park in Westbury from September 30 through October 3. The singles winner and doubles winners will proceed on to the National Tournament in Florida.
