Dear Editor,

Your guest op-ed piece, "RAISE Act Would Be Bad for U.S. Economy," in the August 24th issue by Dev Viswanath and Michael Phulwani is wrong and President Donald Trump is correct.

The RAISE Act's mandate for English-speaking, highly-skilled immigrants will benefit our nation. Canada and Australia use the same merit-based system for their immigration policies.

Our current system of chain migration based on family ties gives us a huge flow of relatives who are poorly prepared to succeed here.

English language fluency is vital for adults and their children. Kids whose parents don't speak or write English at home do poorly in school. That's one reason why only 40 percent of city public school students passed the recent English Language Arts exam.

To bolster English proficiency, 20 states now conduct official business only in that language. President Trump should extend this to all 50 states by declaring English our country's official language.

No more "press 1" to continue in what once was our common language. Do people

in China “press 1” to continue in Mandarin?
