Little thought

Dear Editor,

Donald Trump, who doesn’t read books and is allergic to text in general, is a creature of television and social media. That’s where he spends much of his time, as do tens of millions of Americans, many of whom voted for him.

Because they do not substantially engage with the printed word, many in the public lack habits of thought that are developed through reading, such as following a line of argument, distinguishing between facts and inferences, and detecting abuses of logic and common sense.

It is no wonder then that when Trump tweets and appears on television contradicting himself and jumping from one subject to the next, lots of people don’t care.

Coherency doesn’t play as well as making emotional pitches on television and Twitter, and reasoned argument is boring compared to making wild accusations and leaping from topic to topic.

Trump knows what works in this “post-literate” age, and sadly it does not appear to be deliberate thought.

Sincerely,

Martin H. Levinson
