Over 120 angry students rallied at Queens Borough Hall on April 10 to protest
our a $12 million budget cut for adult literacy classes. This action
spotlights Mayor Bill de Blasio's hypocrisy.
He claims to champion immigrants, but slashes funds to help them learn English, a vital skill for their future. His budget chop is unjustified and inexcusable.
But there's a way to fix this error. Transfer the $14.5 million that taxpayers will
shell out for the mayor and his aides' legal bills to the adult literacy program's budget.
Prosecutors didn't file charges after two corruption probes, so why should we pay his lawyers $900 an hour?
The city's Law Department, staffed by some 900 attorneys, is mandated to handle the
legal affairs of our mayor and his staff relating to their jobs.
Comptroller Scott Stringer has final approval over this expenditure. Taxpayers must urge him to transfer this money to help immigrants learn English and aid other disadvantaged New Yorkers and stop a big waste of our tax dollars.
