It has been almost eight months since Mr. Russel Levinson was forced to close Douglaston Movie World on July 2. Since then there appears to be no activity preparing for Lowe’s.
How disappointing that residents have no nearby local movie theater, and several dozen people employed by Douglaston Movie World lost their jobs.
The Douglaston Plaza shopping center also lost both Toys ‘R’ Us and Modell’s, leaving the second story empty. Has Lowe’s changed their mind about the site?
You have to wonder if the property owner, Askhenady Acquisition Corporation, and the members of Community Board 11, who voted in favor of granting a zoning variance, and the Douglaston Townhouse Condominium Association now have buyer’s remorse.
All they have now is a vacant pink elephant on their hands. Who knows if City Hall will consider the site for a potential homeless shelter, drug rehabilitation clinic, adult home or low-income housing project. Time will tell.
