The St. John’s softball team nearly extended its 2019 season following a Gretchen Bowie three-run home run in the seventh inning before fourth-seeded Villanova defeated the Red Storm, 6-4, in the Big East semifinals in Chicago on Friday afternoon.

Bowie led the charge for the Johnnies, driving in all four of St. John’s runs on a single and her 10th homer of the year. Coming into the contest, she knocked in a team-high 11 runs over the final 10 games of the regular season. Nine of those 11 RBIs came against the Wildcats.

Along with Bowie’s two knocks, the Johnnies saw six other players recorded a hit in Friday’s contest, with Marissa Rizzi, Peyton Cody, Christina Melendez, Amelia Ditolvo, Kaitlyn Lologo, and Meisha Murray all reaching base on a single.

Villanova (29-23, 10-8 Big East) scored five unanswered runs in the first two innings to give the Wildcats an early advantage.

Following a pair of scoreless innings, the Johnnies scored in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Meisha Murray came off the bench to pinch run for Kalei Sorensen after working a walk. She stole second, scoring on a Bowie liner up the middle to cut the deficit to four, 5-1.

St. John’s (26-22, 14-5 Big East) and Villanova were blanked in the sixth inning before the Wildcats tallied another run in the seventh, 6-1.

The Red Storm did not go down quietly in the final frame. Freshman duo Kaitlyn Lologo and Murray slapped back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with one out. In the next at-bat, Bowie smacked a dinger over the left-center field wall to cut the Red Storm’s deficit to two, 6-4.

Before the game, Bowie, Morris, Cody, Rizzi, Melendez, Laura Delgado and the St. John’s coaching staff were recognized by the Big East following a stellar 2019 campaign.

The loss wraps up a successful season for the Red Storm, who earned their third regular-season championship in five years.
