The Red Storm athletics department currently fields 17 Division I programs, including both men’s and women’s basketball programs. Both had been vying for spots in the NCAA Tournament, which was also cancelled for 2020.
"Due to continuous developments on the national and international levels, it is in the best interest of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and all members of the St. John's Athletics community that we proactively take these measures,” said athletic director Mike Cragg in a statement.
“The health and well-being of these individuals will always be our priority,” he added. “While this is a challenging time for all of us, I firmly believe it is important to take action, despite the unfortunate impact it will have, in order to help ensure the safety of everyone involved with Red Storm athletics.”
The decision, effective immediately, was announced last week in conjunction with guidance from public health and medical professionals, along with leadership from the university.
All competition, practices and athletics-related activities are postponed indefinitely, as is the current state of pro and amateur sports in America.
