Joe Lewinger, who served Mary Louis Academy for 20 years as a teacher, coach, athletic director and, most recently, assistant principal, died over the weekend due to coronavirus complications.

Lewinger, 42, was also a member of the Franklin Square School board of trustees, serving as its president in 2016.

“There will be time in the future to celebrate all of Joe’s numerous accomplishments, now is the time to grieve and mourn our tremendous loss,” wrote Mary Louis Academy principal Ann O’Hagan-Cordes in a statement released over the weekend. “We will gather at some point when our city could come out of isolation to share our memories of Mr. Lewinger.”

Lewinger is survived by his wife Maura and their three children, Jack, Madison and Maeve. Franklin Square superintendent Jared Bloom and school board president Stephen Toto wrote a letter to the community posted to the district’s website early Sunday, paying their respects to the late Lewinger.

“While we cannot be together during this most difficult time, we know that the entire Franklin Square community will join us in reaching our arms around his wife Maura and three children, expressing our deepest sympathy and keeping them in our thoughts and prayers,” the statement read.
