Nobody was seriously hurt in the June 21st incident, which destroyed a four-story building located at 493 Myrtle Avenue.
But the graduating senior, identified only as Caitlyn by Couincilwoman Letitia James' office, did lose her graduation dress in the disaster.
James urged residents in her district to help raise funds for a new dress by bringing checks made payable to "Jose Nunez" to her district office at 67 Hanson Place. Her office said checks are also being accepted by Principal Torres at P.S. 157, located at 850 Kent Avenue.
Several violations had been filed against the building before it collapsed, including one for a major crack running down one of the building's sides.
The collapse caused damage to one of the adjacent buildings, forcing residents there out of their homes, leaving them, at least temporarily, homeless, according to a statement from James' office. James was on the scene to ensure victims of the collapse received necessary emergency relief, including temporary shelter from the Red Cross.
Following the incident, residents along Myrtle Avenue between Hall and Ryerson streets were temporarily evacuated from their homes, according to standard emergency procedure. Bus lines were also temporarily rerouted. (Daniel Bush)
