Brooklyn Heights is set to receive $400,000 in funding under a bill passed by the House of Representatives on July 23.
The funding, secured in the fiscal year 2010 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (T-HUD) Appropriations bill, now moves to the Senate for a vote.
If Congress passes the legislation, the money would go to the Brooklyn Heights Association for a project to replace modern aluminum lights with replicas of the original, cast-iron 20th century “Bishop’s Crook” and “M-Pole” streetlights that once graced the neighborhood.
“Brooklyn Heights has preserved its identity as an old New York neighborhood, and today draws many to experience the history and beauty of the area,” said Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, who helped secure the federal resources.
“The Brooklyn Heights Association is dedicated to improving the community for residents and businesses, and I am pleased to help them maintain this urban gem,” Velázquez added.
In 1965, Brooklyn Heights became New York City’s first historic district. It has since become a popular tourist destination for New Yorkers and foreigners alike. (Daniel Bush)
