At its August 12th meeting, Community Board 5 passed a resolution to form a subcommittee to discuss the need for a dog run.
The vote, overwhelmingly in favor of the resolution, was the first concrete step towards approving a dog run.
CB5 board member Kathy Masi introduced the resolution. Earlier in the evening Masi was made co-chair of the Parks Committee, alongside Steve Fiedler.
In introducing the plan Masi said it was time the community board resolve the issue. “Juniper Valley Park is an unbelievable park,” Masi said. “But we need to accommodate the entire community.”
Members of the Juniper Valley Dog Owners Association have been calling for an enclosed dog run at the park, where dogs can roam off leash, for years.
An earlier attempt to create a dog run was blocked. Opponents of the dog run contend it would be noisy, dirty and unpleasant for other park goers.
The dog owners association renewed their efforts this year. In recent months, members of the group have appeared at CB5 meetings to call for the park.
A location for the god run has not been agreed upon yet. Masi said the subcommittee would go to work to find a solution.
“At some point this needs to be addressed,” Masi said. “The best way to address it is to form a committee to look at the issue.” (Daniel Bush)
