In November, 30th District voters will head to the polls to elect a City Council member for the third time in two years.

This time around, the race pits current Democratic Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley, who is seeking her first full term in office, against former council member Thomas Ognibene, a Republican who held the seat in the 1990’s.

Past voter patterns in the district suggest the contest could be very close.

For residents of the district, which represents Maspeth, Middle Village, Glendale, Ridgewood, and parts of Richmond Hill and Woodhaven, this is an important election. Crowley and Ognibene would take the district in different directions.

The race may be tight, but the choice is clear.

In less than one year on the job, Councilwoman Crowley has brought attention to the district for a number of important issues, from development to education to environmental protection. She has boundless energy, an interest in tackling tough problems, and an unusual dedication to constituent services.

This paper is endorsing Elizabeth Crowley for City Council.

The paper’s editorial board interviewed both Crowley and Ognibene before making its decision.

Ognibene is a knowledgeable political insider who has touted his close relationship to the mayor. He knows his way around City Hall, but today that’s not enough.

Solving problems big and small takes hard work, and Crowley is among the hardest-working members of the City Council.

She has grown as an elected official, all the while showing an admirable commitment to the responsibilities of public office and signs of a bright future in city politics.

Crowley is the stronger candidate, and the district would be better off with her in office for four more years.

Does Ognibene really want this?

He already had his chance. Let's move on with Crowley. I agree with your endorsement.

Crowley has changed over the year. I agree with your take on it and now think she can handle it better than most.
